Drink of the Week: Malty Biscuit Brew – 0 Smart Points

It’s not all about the alcohol here on Drink of the Week!

I’m a BIG fan of tea and enjoy trying all different types and flavours. I also love to dunk biscuits into my tea but I don’t love the Smart Points values that come with them! So imagine my delight when I came across these bad boys whilst doing my weekly shop.

Now, my tea-purist relatives turned their noses up when I mentioned it to them, but, having tried a cup, many have been won over.

So what’s it like? Well, it’s just like tea and Rich Tea biscuits but without the sludge of crumbs that end up at the bottom of your mug when you dunk. Because it’s made by Taylors of Harrogate (the finest purveyors of English Breakfast tea IMHO), you also get a strong brew, which isn’t always the case with flavoured black teas. What’s more, if you make it using milk from an allotted allowance for the day as I do, it costs you 0 Smart Points! What’s not to love?

If you have any tea recommendations, please let me know. Mr FFF says I’ve got far too many varieties in the cupboard as it is, but what does he know?!

I’ve been seeing someone.

It’s been going on for weeks. Mr FFF knows and is all for it. The ‘someone’ I’ve been seeing is a personal trainer and so far, it’s going well.

I made the decision back at the beginning of the summer. I have a personal training session once a week and then I go independently another 2 times. My reasoning for paying more on top of my gym membership for PT sessions is that I’m an obliger* – I find it difficult to meet expections that I set for myself but easy(er) to meet someone else’s expections of me. I don’t want to turn up to my PT session on a Saturday and have to say to my trainer that I haven’t been since I last saw him.

I’ve also chosen to go with a gym program for a couple of reasons, despite the fact that I’ve previously always found the gym to be mind-numbingly boring. Historically, I’ve always preferred to attend group exercise classes such as Zumba, Step and Body Pump. I love the music and find that I push myself harder when there is an instructor watching me (there’s that obliger tendancy again). However, my busy schedule during term time means that meeting or training sessions sometimes cause me to miss a class. The problem is, rather than simply going again the following week, this can be enough of an excuse to kick me out of the habit. Going to the gym, however, means that although I’ll still have scheduled times for attending, if I can’t make it for some reason, I can simply go at another time that day or during the same week as I’m not relying on a class timetable.

I’ve been going since the second week in July and so far haven’t missed a session, even when I was on holiday. Before I went, I also booked a PT session for my usual time on the day I came back from holiday to get me straight back into the swing of my healthy lifestyle rather than letting any holiday laziness continue until the following Monday.

So far, it seems to be working and I’m seeing small steps of progress. I’m already lifting heavier weights than I was when I started and finding it easier to do so. The thing I am most proud of is that I can now do 3x 1 minute planks. Previously, I’d always struggled to get to 30 seconds when doing them in a group class, but when there’s someone sitting right next to you with a stopwatch in hand watching only you, (that obliger tendancy kicks in again) you dig that bit deeper.

The real test is going to come now that I’m back at work and have to exercise afterwards rather than getting it done out of the way first thing in the morning. I’ll update you in a few weeks and let you know how I’m getting on.

FFF

Breakfast Cheesecake – 4 Smart Points

Cheesecake is one of my favourite foods ever. So when I saw a recipe for a breakfast cheesecake, I had to try it, even though it sounded a bit weird. However, with so much soft cheese and sugar, it was pretty high in Smart Points value so here’s my recipe for a slimmed down version.

Servings: 10

Smart Points: 4 per serving

What you need:

  • 75g low fat spread
  • 650g low fat soft cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 60g oats
  • juice and rind of one orange
  • 4 tablespoons sweetener (I used Stevia)
  • pinch of salt

What to do:

  1. Heat the oven to 170C/Gas Mark 3. Line a 23cm springform tin with baking paper.
  2. Beat the cheese until smooth then stir in the rest of the ingredients using 1tbsp of the orange juice.
  3. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for about 25 minutes until it is just set with a hint of wobbliness in the middle.
  4. Serve hot, warm, cold or at room temperature with fruit coulis.

Top Tip: For ease, I line the baking tin roughly by pushing in a rectangular sheet of paper. It gives the cheesecake slices a ‘rustic’ look but saves faffing about cutting out strips and circles of paper.

This week I’m loving – Lush Tadaima Okaeri Bath Bombs

Today was my first day back at work since the beginning of July. Having enjoyed just over 8 weeks of relaxing and pleasing myself, the beginning of the new school year can be a bit stressful as I try to get my head around timetables, displays, class lists and remembering how to teach and get the kids to do what they’re told!

So, as part of my preparation in the last couple of days, as I make sure that my clothes for the week are ironed, my bag is packed and my new school shoes ready to go, I also take time to relax.

This year, that has taken the form of luxuriating in a Lushious bath with a Tadaima Okaeri Bath Bomb. Their website promises:

Make yourself at home with woody sandalwood, syrupy tonka absolute and sweet vanilla. As it dissolves, this sugary but spicy blend fills your bathroom with the reassuring scent of freshly baked cinnamon buns. Known for its soothing effects on the skin, sandalwood is a gentle emollient that will leave your skin feeling calm and comforted.

Lush UK

At first splash, it was one of their ‘soft’ baths bombs that foams rathers than fizzes. But once the star part of the bomb got going, it started to bubble and fizz and opened up to reveal a golden coloured cave of fizzy loveliness. My bath was filled with a golden, shimmery lustre (that is ok for the evironment) and my nostrils were filled with the exotic spells of a Morrocan souk. Not that I’ve ever been to Morroco, but it’s how I imagine it would smell wandering around the spice stalls. It was enough to prolong the summer holidays for just a little bit longer anyway!

Keeping My Hands Out of the Biscuit Tin

One of the recommendations for helping to break a habit is to replace that habit with something else. So, for example, people who are trying to stop smoking are encouraged to make a list of little tasks they can do to distract themselves when they’re craving a cigarette.

In the same vein, I’ve been engaging in a number of different activities to help me avoid binge eating or emotional eating. In this series, I’m going to share with you some of the things I’ve been doing to ‘keep my hands out of the biscuit tin’. After all, I wouldn’t want to get chocolatey smudges all over everything would I?!

Watch out for the first of these posts coming soon…

You can’t lose weight while you’re on holiday!

Or so I’d always told myself. But it turns out I was wrong (Ssshhh! Don’t tell Mr FFF – my official line is that I’m always right!). On my recent 14 night cruise, I somehow managed to lose 2lb! And no that’s not a typo. I actually lost weight whilst on a cruise where food and drink were available 24 hours. I’m still in shock. Last year, on an almost identical cruise, I put on about 7lb.

So how did I do it? Did I deprive myself and eat only lettuce leaves and plain, grilled fish whilst sipping water? No. But I did change my mindset towards the way I ate whilst I was away.

On holidays past, I would pretty much eat whatever I wanted, whenver I wanted and would justify it to myself by saying that I deserved it, after all I was on holiday. The thing is, for me, as for many others, it always seems to take longer to lose weight than it does to put it on. And, I’m lucky enough to go away at least a couple of times each year. I realised that my ‘enjoy it while you can’ attitude effectively meant that I was only ever gaining and losing holiday weight.

This realisation, coupled with my latest attempt to lose the weight for good, lead me to review my mindset towards holiday eating before I even packed my suitcase. I knew that there would be wall-to-wall food and drink available if I wanted it. I also knew that, while lots of the options available are at the less healthy end of the spectrum, there would also be plenty of healthier stuff too. So I decided to make the most of having healthy food freshly prepared for me at each meal.

I mainly ate omlettes, bircher muesli and fresh fruit for breakfast. For lunch I would generally load up on the various different salads offered in the buffet and add some chicken or fish to them. At dinner, I generally opted for the fish or chicken options and avoided anything that came in a creamy sauce. I didn’t eat like a fitness model all the time though. I had a dessert every night – but I didn’t have a dessert every lunchtime, just once or twice. I also ate breakfast pastries a couple of times, but not every day.

We also chose not to get the all inclusive drinks package on this cruise. There were several factors that played into this but the main one being in the past when we had a package, we sometimes felt like we were drinking just for the sake of it. I still drank wine with dinner almost every night and enjoyed several cocktails, but it was in moderation.

I think that exercising regularly also really helped. I went to the gym on every sea day as well as the one port day when we’d decided to only get off the ship for a couple of hours. In the past, I’ve had good intentions about exercising whilst on holiday but they’d usually stayed at that – intentions rather than actions. This time, I’d decided in advance that I would continue to get up early and go to the gym before breakfast. This would then give me the whole day to lounge around or take part in the activities offered. Although there were a couple of times when I was tempted just to lie in bed, I reasoned that, once I’d been to the gym, I could spend the rest of the day lying on my balcony reading if I so wished. Exercising first thing also helped me to make healthier choices with my food as I always feel like eating more healthily when I’m exercising regularly.

Better than the view from my local gym.
Proof that I was actually there!

The funny thing was, I didn’t feel deprived at all. I felt lucky that there was such delicious, healthy food being prepared for me for every meal. And I enjoyed being up early and in the gym when there were only a few other people about. Sitting on my balcony afterwards with a cup of tea and enjoying the peace and quiet was also something I really looked forward to each day.

So, it turns out I’m not always right; it is totally possible to go on holiday, enjoy yourself and still lose weight.

Drink of the Week: Pear Blossom – 5 Smart Points

On my recent cruise, I took advantage of the opportunity to sample a (wide) variety of the different cocktails they were handcrafting on board. One of the first I tried was the delightfully refreshing ‘Pear Blossom’. The combination of pear and elderflower meant that it was sweet, but not sickly, whilst the mint and lime added a freshness that made it perfect for recharging my batteries after long, hot days in port.

What you’ll need:

  • 25ml pear vodka
  • 25ml elderflower liqueur
  • diet lemonade
  • spring of mint
  • slice of lime

What to do:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice and top with the mint and lime.
  2. Shake the vodka and liqueur over ice.
  3. Strain into the glass.
  4. Top with the lemonade and enjoy!

Tuna, Avocado & Sundried Tomato Salad

In this week’s WW, we spoke about the usefulness of having a range of ‘fast food’ recipes to fall back on when we’re busy with work/kids/life.

With this in mind, today for lunch I had this super quick yet tasty and healthy salad.

Servings: 1

Smart Points: 7

  • Mixed salad leaves
  • sundried tomatoes, chopped into small pieces
  • 1/2 avocado, chopped
  • tin of tuna drained

Scatter the rest of the ingredients over the salad leaves & enjoy!

P&O Azura 14 Night Mediterranean Cruise – Day 14: Final Sea Day

The final day of our cruise has arrived. In a break with tradition, I didn’t go to the gym this morning because I’ve got an appointment booked with my personal trainer tomorrow afternoon and I’m not supposed to train for more that 2 days in a row. So instead, I enjoyed a cup of tea of the balcony before heading up to the buffet for breakfast.

After breakfast, we did the bulk of our packing until it was time to go to the wine tasting event that we’d booked. It was held in one of the MDRs with the head sommelier. It cost £15pp and included a welcome glass of prosecco, 2 whites, 2 reds and a plate of hor d’oeurves. The head sommelier gave us an introduction to the world of wine and instructions on how to properly taste wine. The wines tasted, a French sauvignon blanc and chablis, an Argentinian Malbec and a chateau neuf du pape, were all were different and very drinkable. A good introduction to wine tasting. All of the wines were reasonably priced and available to buy on board. I think it would have been better to hold this tasting earlier on in the cruise as then we would have had the opportunity to enjoy more of our favourites but this was the only time that the event was held. It was a nice way to pass an hour anyway.

Before heading up to the buffet for our final lunch, we visited the photo gallery and found that we’d actually managed to get some nice photos taken last night! We took advantage of one of their offers and ordered 10 photos between us for £70.

The afternoon was still nice and sunny so I took the opportunity to sunbathe on the balcony for the final time although it was hard to concentrate on reading as there were loads of dolphins out playing.

All too quickly, it was time to get ready for the last supper which saw us in the MDR for the final time. I ordered a Waldorf salad – not something I’d usually go for but it was really tasty, pea and asparagus raviolli and a creme fraiche bavarois with apple and cinnamon. Another superb meal to finish off a wonderful 2 weeks of eating.

After dinner, we snapped a few photos around the ship before going to see this evening’s entertainment, an Elton John tribute act who was pretty good. A final stroll on the promenade to take in another beautiful sunset was followed a last drink on the balcony before heading to bed ready to disembark and drive home tomorrow.

All in all, we had a really good cruise and I would sail with P&O again.

Time for the countdown to the next cruise to begin…

Thanks for following along with me,

FFF
